Everyday life is a beautiful trip!

Relative(s)

Distance and time, they’re both relative, a fact we have experienced again and again during this trip. In the Netherlands we live relatively far from e.g. Maartens brother and his partner. They live about 165 km (103 miles) from where we live. If you take in consideration that in the Netherlands the distance from East to West is about 200 km (125  miles) and from north to south about 300 km (186 miles) 165 km is almost like a cross country drive. We don’t see each other that often partly because of the distance. But at this moment we are both traveling here in the States with an overlap here in Florida. And so, because we are in the same country and state, we decided to get together for breakfast. We got together at a Cracker Barrel that was located at about 275 km from where we are staying and we had a great time and good food.

Driving back we talked about how we are driving more than five hours round trip to visit with each other and we don’t think about it twice, but back home the distance is an issue.

I am experiencing the same with time, back home a day turns into a week, which turns into a month and time just seems to evaporate. When I am traveling it feels different, days are not similar to each other and neither are the places and environments where we are staying. I love this, because it means that the last 10 days feel more like 10 weeks. It helps me stay in the here and now and I try not to think to far ahead.

Unfortunately I am afraid that as soon as we are back in the Netherlands and everyday life sets in again, my mindset about distance and time will fall back to what it has always been. For now I will enjoy the here and now and think about how I can hold onto this mindset when we get back to the Netherlands.
